The Lady Sentinels soccer team has gotten off to a solid start, with a 1-1 record after its first two games.
They lost a tough game to Potomac State in West Virginia, 3-1, with two of Potomac State’s goals coming off of free kicks. They followed the loss with a 5-2 win over Columbia Union in Maryland last Friday. Around thirty PHC students traveled to Columbia to cheer on the victory.
“We were missing some key elements in the first game,” Coach Janna Bowman said. But when down 2-0 against Columbia, Bowman told the girls to “dig deep,” and they responded with five unanswered goals.
Bowman said the immediate direction of the team is to continue work on endurance, ball skills, and team unity.
“We recognize that ‘team’ is one body,” the third-year coach said. She teaches the girls to recognize which part they play well and to give it their best.
Emily Farris, in her first year on the team, said, “We are all working well together and it’s only going to get better.”
The Lady Sentinels now have 17 players on their roster, following a season-ending knee injury to Brooke Butler.
Cate Pilgrim, their starting goalkeeper, suffered a concussion after colliding with a Columbia Union player during what Bowman described as an “absolutely amazing save.” Pilgrim is expected to play during Monday’s home game against Fairfax Community College.
