Washington, D.C. and Greater D.C. Area

Many families schedule extra time before or after their PHC visit to explore the historical and cultural sights in the northern Virginia and D.C. area.

One hour east of Patrick Henry College is our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. There are many attractions in Washington and in the surrounding areas, most of which are free of charge. We recommend that you visit all of the monuments and memorials, and many of the Government Buildings as well, including: Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, Arlington National Cemetery, White House, Smithsonian Museums (including the Air & Space Museum), National Archives, National Gallery of Art, Capitol Building, Supreme Court, FBI Building, Pentagon, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, The Library of Congress, Ford's Theatre and Lincoln Museum, etc.

Mount Vernon, the home of George & Martha Washington, is located in Alexandria, Virginia, about one hour from the PHC campus.

Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, is located in Charlottesville, Virginia, about two hours from the PHC campus. Those visiting Monticello will want to also visit Montpelier (home to James and Dolly Madison), a short 30 minutes away.

Virginia's capital, Richmond, is a two and a half hour drive from the PHC campus. If you decide to visit Richmond, you will certainly want to see St. John's Church where Patrick Henry gave his "Liberty or Death" speech. Also of interest are the state Capitol building and the Confederate cemetery.

Only three hours away, Williamsburg, Virginia is a must see for the history buff. Not only can you walk the streets of colonial Williamsburg and experience life as it happened in the past, but you can also visit the Jamestown settlement, the Yorktown Battlefield, and Busch Gardens.

Just an hour and a half northeast of PHC is Baltimore, Maryland. While in Baltimore you will want to visit Fort McHenry, where Francis Scott Key penned the Star Spangled Banner. You can also spend time at the National Aquarium, catch an Orioles baseball game, and eat seafood in the inner harbor.

It was also a strategic armory for the Union and the Confederate armies during the War. During your visit, you will want to hike to the top of Maryland Heights, and, if it is warm enough, jump into the Potomac.

Go hiking on the historic Appalachian Trail, located just 10 miles from PHC's campus.
