Pedagogy Research Guide

Welcome to the Research Guide for Biblical Worldview and Pedagogy I and II.  The suggested databases are purchased for the use of the PHC community and are available linked from here and from the Electronic Resources section of the library home page.  Print resources are available in the PHC on campus collection or by mail to distance learning members of the PHC community.  You may check the location and the availability of an item in the on campus collection through the online catalog, Voyager, accessed here and through the library home page.

Databases 

 

ERIC
Represents the most complete bibliography of educational materials available since 1966. Indexes 1.2 billion records of education-related materials--journal articles, books, reports, etc. ERIC on ed.gov is a free version of this database. The free version does a better job of limiting to full-text results. This version on FirstSearch provides a link to request through ILL any of the items.

JSTOR
Using the acronym for “journal storage”, this collection contains complete back issues of 241 scholarly journals in a wide range of disciplines. Issues from the most recent five years for each title are not included in the collection.

ProQuest Research Library
ProQuest contains the citations and abstracts of over 1,000 titles in the broad areas of social sciences and law. Of those 1,000 titles, 710 provide users with full-text, images and graphics online. Indexing and full-text coverage begins in the early 1990s for most titles.

http://en.childrenslibrary.org/ provides access to a wide range of full-text children's books including recent award winning books, featured authors, and the ability to search by a variety of methods cover art.

http://globalschoolnet.org/index.cfm  promotes the sharing of ideas, resources, and best practices among teachers. 

http://reading.org accesses a variety of web resources that promote and teach literacy.

http://www.readingonline.org/about/about_index.asp accesses Reading Online, a free source of articles about reading instruction.

http://www.reading.org/Resources/Booklists.aspx   accesses a site of reviewed and recommended book lists for all ages.

http://lexile.com/ provides a process to identify reading levels of students and text.

http://www.wfu.edu/education/fourblocks/about_fourblocks.html is a site for the organization of four block reading instruction.

http://www.crpe.org is the site for the Center on Reinventing Public Education providing the most current trends in educational philosophy with links to additional worthwhile sources.

http://www.thetraits.org/definitions.php provides explanations, rubrics, etc. for teaching and assessing 6 + 1 Writing Traits.

http://www.reading.org/General/CurrentResearch/Reports.aspx provides the most recent research from International Reading Association.

http://www.naeducation.org/ provides access to current research and trends in educational policy.

http://nces.ed.gov/pubsearch/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2006064  is the National Center for Education Statistics providing valuable research results.

http://circeinstitute.com/ is an excellent resource for classical education pedagogy. It also provides links to other groups which support classical education.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (IJSTL) at http://www.academics.georgiasouthern.edu/ijsotl is a scholarly (peer reviewed) electronic journal that is published twice-a-year by the Center for Excellence in Teaching at Georgia Southern University.

 

Research tips

 

  • Search by subject:  Once you have located a potential source in the catalog, click on the search term within the record to find other items on the same or similar subjects.
  • Search by call number:   Once you have located a potential source in the catalog, click on the call number to browse titles on the same or a similar subject that surround the item on the shelf.
  • Once you locate n potential source, additional valuable resources may be listed in the item's bibliography.
  • Loudoun County Public Library's Purcellville branch is available to students of PHC.  The library catalog can be accesssed online and a library card can be obtained with a PHC ID.
  • If you are not able to find what you need on campus or online, you may also request an item through Interlibrary loan.  Instructions for obtaining an Interlibrary loan are available in the Library Services section of the library website.
